A passage to India

An exhibition dedicated to the images of India part of the USIS (United States Information Service) photograph fund owned by the Photographic Library of the Civic Museums of History and Art. On display for the first time, a selection of 500 photographs from the original “India” series, taken between 1939 and 1950, as propaganda to highlight the link between prosperity and democracy. Despite being commissioned for an educational rather than artistic project, thanks to the versatility of photography the images can be appreciated beyond their original intended purpose. Visitors are taken on a journey that explores the world conflict, the work world, the coexistence of rural, exotic India with urban, modern India and the charm of the great temples.
