Located in the Fighter’s House (by Arch. Umberto Nordio), built on the site of the Austrian barracks where Guglielmo Oberdan was executed on 20 December 1882, the Museum conserves documents, photographs, uniforms, memorabilia and paintings connected to the events and figures of the Risorgimento, from the riots of 1848 to the end of the First World War. Initially developed around the legacy of the writer and patriot Filippo Zamboni, the Museum, whose central room is decorated with frescos by Carlo Sbisà, exhibits mainly items acquired through private donations, such as the documents, uniforms and belongings of Scipio Slataper, brothers Giani and Carlo Stuparich and Nazario Sauro. The magnificent picture by Carlo Wostry, Trieste XXX October 1918, is of great interest. Oberdan’s Memorial stands alongside the Museum, with the original cell in which he was imprisoned while awaiting execution and statuary by the sculptor Attilio Selva.
